Horse Riding Holiday in the Ukraine
There are few places left in the world untouched by tourism, when we travel we follow the footprints of many who have passed the same way, although, of course, everyone’s experience of new places is different.
As horse riders we have the advantage of being able to share our new travel experiences with the horses we ride. We become close friends with our mounts and the connection formed between us enhances our enjoyment of new environments and allows us access to remote and sometimes challenging terrain.
Do Something Different With Your Holiday Time
Enjoy horse riding with experienced, English speaking, instructors in the stunning scenery of the Carpathian Mountains. Leave the beaten track behind and experience a Ukraine rarely seen by foreigners. Spend some time living the life of the Hutsuls – an ethno-cultural group of Ukrainian highlanders and ride these sure footed little mountain horses. Return each evening to the comfort and charm of Silver Lake Cottage and wonderful home cooked food.
This is a remote place, where people still plough their fields, bake their food and practice traditional crafts. Horse riding in this area allows us a unique opportunity to experience the traditional lifestyle of the Hutsuls highlanders’ culture and visit Hutsul shepherds, as well as enjoying the unspoilt nature of the Carpathian Mountains.
Making A Difference
Responsible tourism to this area contributes to the economic well-being of the local communities, all the guides are local and love to share their in-depth knowledge of their homeland. You will meet local people and get to know the real Ukraine and make a positive impact on the local community. There will be time for sight seeing in Lviv – Ukrakaine’s most charming city, and Kolomya – the centre of Hutsul highlanders’ culture.
Silver Lake Cottage is located 20km away from Kolomyia town – the cultural centre of Hutsuls, Ukraine’s ethno-cultural group of highlanders. The accommodation is a two-storey wooden cottage sleeping ten, on the shores of the beautiful Silver Lake. All the walls and furniture in the cottage are made of wood. 15 traditional Hutsul horses sleep in the nearby stables, where they specialise in breeding these beautiful horses.
The Hutsul Horse
The Hucul, or Carpathian, is a pony or small horse breed originally from the Carpathian Mountains. It has a heavy build and possesses great endurance and hardiness. The breed is also referred to as the Carpathian pony, Huculska, Hutsul, Hutan or Huzul. The breed gets its name from the Hutsul people, who live mostly in the Carpathian Mountain’s in Ukraine and in Romania, but also in an area in the East Carpathian Mountains north of the river Bistritz, officially named “Huzelei”.
